What Goes into a Watch Restoration?

Watch Repair Jewelers In Grand Rapids MiOur watch restoration service will vary depending on your type of watch, but there are a few key steps every process has. As your fine jeweler and watch provider, we’re here to give you the best services in Grand Rapids.

On our staff, we don’t have salespeople, we have craftsmen. Everyone must be knowledgeable in jewelry and watches, and undergo a rigorous training process before we allow them to work with your luxury pieces.

If you’re looking to learn more about our watch repair and restoration process, we invite you to read more.

Step 1: Inspection and Analysis

Paul Medawar Fine Jewelry services all watch brands. The first step in our process is to learn from you. We want to gather what we can about your watch before we plan any sort of restoration.

This step is the perfect time for you to tell us about any accidents that may have happened, or if one part stopped working before another. Some watch repairs are simple, like changing a watch battery, while others are more complex and require a complete restoration. Whatever the case may be, our professional team is happy to talk before undergoing the watch restoration process.

Step 2: Disassembly

It may sound scary at first, but yes, some disassembly is required.

Whether it’s an old battery we need to take out or a bad watch clasp that needs to be removed, replacements are natural when restoring your watch to its original condition. Our team handles this process with the highest level of care. In addition to having two professional watchmakers on staff, all of our team members are trained in every watch option and function. We’ll be sure to keep your timepiece and all its components properly sorted and looked after as we provide you with the best service.

Step 3: Cleaning and Refurbishing

In our watch restoration video, you’ll see some of our process. During the cleaning phase, we make sure to go through every part and clean them of unwanted oils and impurities.

In this phase, if a component like a mainspring, repeater, reverser wheel, or watch crystal needs to be replaced, we’ll take care of it. Our team meticulously combs through all the parts of your timepiece to make sure everything is as good as new.

Any lubrication needed will be added here to ensure your valuable watch runs without error now and for the time to come. It’s important to note that all watches, yes even luxury watches should be serviced regularly to ensure that they will stay in good working order for generations to come.

Different watches require different service intervals; this all depends on the age, style and make of the watch. Currently, the newest generation Rolex watches holds one of the longest service intervals at 10 years between services! This is quite amazing considering that the typical watch is said to have about a 4-7 year service interval.

With Paul Medawar as your fine jeweler, you don’t have to worry about us over-polishing or over-buffing your watch either. Amateur watch repair services often do this and ruin the silhouette of your timepiece, but with our experts on the job, you can sit back and relax.

Step 4: Reassembly

At this point, we will carefully put your watch back together with all of its refurbished or restored components. Our watchmakers and staff are fully prepared to reassemble almost any brand of watch so it functions as originally intended.

Step 5: Exterior Restoration

We meticulously clean the exterior of the watch and all its components to ensure that everything is ready for a perfect polish. The art of the polish… Polishing is an art. Because there are literally thousands of watches, and each watch is different and has different finishes, our watchmakers must go through a step-by-step training process on polishing techniques. Only master level polishers are allowed to touch your precious timepiece. We are trained to bring your watch back to its lustrous finish with our special equipment and expertly trained staff.

Step 6: Quality Assurance Testing

After all is said and done, we make sure your watch ticks right.

As a fine jewelry repair service, we’ll be sure to put your watch through the necessary tests so it’s ready for whatever life has to throw at it. When it gets our approval, we’ll let you know your watch is ready for pick up.
